10 Ways to Prepare for Your Session

Preparing for a photography session is key to setting the stage for capturing memorable moments effectively. Adequate preparation ensures that both the photographer and the subject are aligned in vision and expectations. From selecting the right location and outfits to communicating preferences and poses. My goal is to deliver stunning and meaningful photographs to reflect your unique personality and style.

Here are 10 ways to prepare for your session:

  1. Communicate with your photographer. Discuss your vision, preferences, and any specific shots you want. No two clients are the same and I fully want to capture you the way you feel best.
  2. Choose your outfits. Select clothing that complements the location and style of the shoot. It doesn't hurt if you feel ahhh-mazing in it too!
  3. Choose a location. Find an ideal spot for your session, considering lighting, backgrounds, and the ambiance.
  4. Practice your poses. Practice different poses in front of a mirror to feel more comfortable during the session. My clients get the luxury of using my time learned tricks so I'll be there to coach you along your session for added oomph.
  5. Get plenty of rest. Ensure you're well-rested and feel your best on the day of the shoot. This is easier said than done (especially for all of my family session clients). The takeaway here for this point is perhaps scheduling at a time that works best. If you have little kids, schedule at a time of day they seem happiest, after a nap, or just before dinner so you can celebrate together afterwards. If rushing to get a whole family photographed early in the morning seems daunting, it's because it is. Give yourself some flexibility and opt for an afternoon session.
  6. Hydrate and nourish. Pack a water and a clean snack in case you or the gang get hangry. It happens. Sometimes we need that extra fuel. Extra perk: hydrated skin keeps your skin glowing.
  7. Choose props or accessories. Bring along any props or accessories that enhance the theme of the shoot. It's as simple as a cherished stuffed animal or a complimenting blanket for some sitting poses.
  8. Arrive early. Get to your location a few minutes early to settle in, look around, and acclimate to your surroundings.
  9. Touch up hair and makeup. Freshen up hair and makeup before the session for a polished look.
  10. Relax and have fun! Enjoy the experience - easier said than done, I know. Let your guard down and be yourself. I want to capture your personality and let that be what shines through in the photos.

Do you have any other tips you've learned through photography sessions? I'd love to hear them!
